New EMC World iPad App

Just as I was heading for the airport, I got a notice that a new app was in the iTunes store: EMC Folio.

It's a new offering, developed by Randy Ziegler's team, designed to present large amounts of content on the iPad in an organized fashion.  I've bee playing with it now for exactly five minutes -- so far, so good.

If you're heading out to EMC World, or even if you're not, why not check out and see what you think?

Simply head over to the iTuned app store, and search for "EMC Folio".  After a quick reg process and confirmation email, you're good to go.  Warning: lots of content gets sent at first, so not the best thing to do over your 3G network ...

Big Science Means Big Data

I don't know about you, but modern astronomy fascinates me: just about everything I learned about the subject when younger has since been re-written.  Like most of the sciences, things are moving fast indeed.

Increasingly, pushing the boundaries of human understanding now requires big data.  The bigger the science, the bigger the data it seems.

As a case in point, I'd like to discuss the proposed Square Kilometre Array (SKA), and how -- from a storage perspective -- it pushes the boundaries for all of us.

When Cloud Meets Big Data: Information Logistics Revisited

Mix two powerful themes in IT today -- "cloud" and "big data" -- and all sorts of interesting new conversations pop up.

For example, any meaningful cloud discussion will eventually hit on the difficult tradeoffs involved in moving information to the right place at the right time.

A while back, I wrote a well-received post on the subject ("That's Information Logistics" ) which sparked some interesting discussion.

Certainly, the provisional topic of "information logistics" can be interesting enough when we're talking modest amounts of relatively important information.

But change the view point to enormous amounts of very important information, and it's a very compelling discussion indeed -- one that will likely require new forms of enabling technology.

Across all of EMC, we're busily making plans for EMC World.  And maybe you should be as well.

Every indication is that it'll be way above-and-beyond even last year's gathering.

If you've been before, expect even more of what you liked, plus a few big surprises.  

But if you've never been before, I'd like to make my case as to why you should invest the time.
