Chuck, being someone who is well past 50 myself and having experienced many of the same outsourcing conversations you describe, your post really struck a chord.

I think we (IT) did ourselves a dis-service by promoting costs savings as the primary business driver to outsourcing. I can't think of one instance that I was involved in that actually delivered savings.

I cringe when I hear it happening all over again with cloud. Going to the cloud is not about saving money (its great if you can accomplish saving some money), but rather it is about the agility and the elasticity that being cloud-based brings to our organizations and companies.

Nice analogy Chuck, I have observed the same thing on outsourcing business. I think for the public cloud, it can be less disruptive because business can gradually adopt public clouds and it does not involve movement of people. As Jeff pointed out, public cloud is not about cost, but about agility and elasticity. For that, a hybrid cloud stategy and enabling technologies for the freedom to move out and in private cloud are the keys for success of modern enterprise IT.
