My Favorite Charity
Now, lest you think that EMC is entirely about technology, profits, markets, beating competitors, et. al. we do have a distinct charitable side to our corporate ethos.
EMC invests considerably in a wide range of "make the world a better place" initiatives, both on a local and global scale.
And, a few years ago, we started working in an area that I find fascinating.
The EMC Heritage Trust Project
The problem is simple. More and more of our cultural heritage is digital in nature, or perhaps should be.
But there are long-term societal challenges in gathering this information, preserving it, and making it accessible to future generations.
Who owns preserving our collective digital heritage?
The answer is no one, and every one.
How It Works
Announced last year at EMC World, individuals and/or groups apply for cash grants -- ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 -- to inspire others towards stewardship of our information heritage.
This year's winners can be found here. Individually, these may appear to be small efforts, but -- collectively -- they create the seed of a movement towards digital preservation that we will value in future generations.
For all you cynics out there, no, we don't ask them to take the money and buy products from EMC, although some inevitably do!
An Invitation
Do you know someone who might be interested in an information conservation effort at a local level?
Or, maybe this is the sort of thing you'd be personally interested in?
If so, I'd invite you to find out more here.
Speaking strictly from a personal perspective, I think this is cool.
Because if we don't preserve our digital heritage, no one is going to do it for us.

that is a great cause.
